Top 12 Most Popular Recipes From 2016 {plus my personal favorites!} (1)

I love the week that falls between Christmas and New Year’s Day. I am a reflective person so it brings me a lot of joy to look back at my year of personal experiences, my family, and my blog. I have to admit, having a blog makes it much easier to remember since it’s all documented and stamped with a date…makes me appreciate what this blog means to me even more, although due to the evolution of the (sometimes big, bad, scary) internet I find myself sharing more about food and less about personal & family over the years. It’s all good.

2016 was interesting. I turned 40. I went back to college. I embraced fitness and got strong (surprised myself). My oldest started middle school. We survived a scary hurricane. My daughter was a guest judge for a recipe contest at a produce conference. My baby turned 3 and became a little person, not really a baby anymore. I went out of my comfort zone and was a speaker at a dietician/healthy blogger conference (and loved it). I traveled to Vermont, Savannah and the Florida Panhandle. My friend Kristen came to visit me and we went to see Justin Bieber and Mickey Mouse. My family & I went to Disney – a lot. I withdrew from college. My husband & I celebrated our 14th wedding anniversary. I watched family members go through some health problems. We attended the most epic Indian wedding celebration. My daughter and I volunteered for the 2016 presidential campaign. I grew personally and professionally.

Great recipes and what looks like a big year! Could you talk a bit more about your decision to enroll and then withdraw from college? I’m curious about youe experience and think many people could relate to the feelings that you were going through. Thanks!!

Hi Hillary! I’ve been thinking about your question since you asked it and I apologize it’s taken me so long to reply. I plan on explaining a little more on my experience in a blog post (thanks to your question – because I think/hope others could relate)….but I wanted to reply directly to you too. My school plan included 5 prerequisite science courses (that I did not have to take for my Bachelors in Marketing) which would then enable me to apply for an accredited dietetics Bachelors program (online) to pursue becoming a Registered Dietician. My first semester was very successful and I loved being at school – I was enrolled in one class (anatomy & physiology) and really took the time I needed to study and attend class. My fall semester I signed up for two sciences (to speed things along) and I quickly realized the time I needed to attend class each day and keep up with lab assignments and studying for exams was going to be a challenge. As you know, I have 3 kids. I found myself completely tapped out, not enough time at all to be with my family on the weekends and always feeling spread thin. Also, I have this blog that I’ve worked so hard on for over 8 years and has very fortunately provided me with an opportunity to work from home. I guess my perspective shifted a bit and I realized that the time I was putting in to school (and the future time – like 3 to 4 years at the part time rate I was going) may not be worth the outcome in the end for me. I did not want to be stressed out, spread thin mom for the next 4 years and miss out on a big part of my kids’ childhood. So long story short…the timing was not right for me to go back to school, it was hard!! It was a very bittersweet decision but one that brought me huge relief once I made it. I also realized that just because I wasn’t going to school to pursue a career fueled my passion for nutrition didn’t mean I couldn’t still be passionate about nutrition and good eating and sharing it with others. I have my blog, and I’ve considered other paths where I could work with people (I am a people person and a big part of going back to school that made me so happy was being around people again!). I’m still trying to figure things out for myself, but I am happy. And I’m glad you asked, so thank you!!
