Getting all dolled up is fun but also kind of stressful when there’s black tie attire involved. Black tie fashion implies a formal event, which comes with the pressure of dressing appropriately for said occasion.

“If you’re looking for inspiration, try reviewing a recent red carpet from a formal awards show like the Oscars or Grammys,” shares Lauren Chan, model, entrepreneur and size-inclusion advocate. These red carpets are full of celebrities who find fresh ways to push the boundaries of traditional black tie attire, while still looking elegant and respectful. For example, this year’s red carpets saw trends like the peplum waist and corset dresses dominate women’s silhouettes, while velvet and sequins added textural elements.

Meanwhile, men on the red carpets opted out of following the strict dress code, with some forgoing said black tie (and shirt) altogether and opting for daring, chest-baring looks. Others kept it classic with their clothes but mixed it up with their footwear, choosing patent boots or loafers. Of course, there were plenty of gents that followed the rules and looked dapper in bow ties and satin lapels too.

Whether you have a roster of black tie weddings on the calendar, a super fancy work event or an invitation to a ball (could happen!), we’re here to guide you through the ins and outs of the black tie dress code.

What is black tie attire?

Black tie attire is traditionally defined by formal evening wear. A “black tie required” dress code used to be quite rigid, with men required to don tuxedos and bow ties and women expected to wear floor-length gowns. While these are still the default rules, there’s more room for nuance, especially if the invite says “black tie preferred” or “black tie optional”. These two directions mean that men can wear a dark suit instead of a tux, and women can wear a formal dress, but it doesn’t necessarily have to be floor length.

“In my opinion, it’s always better to err on the side of being overdressed than underdressed. And it’s also important to keep the context of the event in mind,” celebrity stylist Ariel Tunnell explains. “Is it a black tie professional fundraiser? Best to stick to standard black tie. Is it an all-out destination wedding that’s the party of the year? If so, then you have a lot more freedom to interpret a formal dress code to fit your personality.”

Chan agrees that black tie attire has broadened its scope. “In my opinion, strict dress codes are a thing of the past — as are antiquated, binary norms of what men and women can wear,” Chan says.“When I see a ‘black tie’ direction on an invitation, I simply interpret it as a reminder to dress with the utmost respect.” Of course, it’s recommended to check with the host if you have any questions about what’s appropriate to wear.

A low-back cut brings sex appeal to this red carpet-worthy dress that Chan loves. The figure-skimming style is currently an additional 60% off the sale price of $352 with the code SHOPSALE, so you can grab it at a steal of a deal. (Just note that it is final sale!)

Tux rentals are common practice for men, and occasionwear rentals are becoming more popular among women too. With Nuuly's monthly subscription, you get to pick out six items per rental period. If your calendar is packed with weddings and formal events, you can easily cover your bases and try out a handful of black tie dresses. Chicago-based stylistKatie Schuppler loves this statement-making dress. Boasting a floral print, strapless neckline and drop waist, the romantic style would be great for a black tie wedding. Use code ONMYWAY to get 20% off.

"Azazie offers so many great gowns at affordable price points, with sizes ranging from 0 to 30," Tunnell shares. In addition to a generous size range, the company also offers free custom sizing on this style and others, where customers provide their measurements and get a dress made just for them.

If you want to shine but without sequins or glitter, this sleek metallic gown will do the trick. The silver slip-style dress is for the chic minimalist.

Chan recommends this elegant gown that features a square neckline and thigh-high slit. Black is appropriate for any formal event, and we also love the red color for a standout option.

Black tie dresses under $500

"Since many outfits for a black tie event have details like sequins, beading or other embellishments that can make the outfit itchy or irritating to the skin, adding a lining on the inside of the outfit if it doesn’t already have one is a great way to ensure a more comfortable look," Schuppler says. Thankfully, this one comes outfitted with a lining.

For your main character moment, Schuppler picks this showstopper. The stunning gown will show off your curves with a corset bodice, asymmetrical neckline, sheer panel and subtle train.

"For an alternative to gowns, Ilove Little Black Tux for women’s suiting," Tunnell shares. "They offer a huge range of colors and an inclusive size range of 0 to 26." This tuxedo jacket is tailored to flatter women's curves while still looking classic. Pair it with slim fit or straight leg tux pants to complete the set for under $300.

Black tie shoes for women

Chan recommends these trendy heels that have an added flair — literally. The flared base of the heel provides some extra support for the mule sandal. "It’s extremely important for me to have easy-wearing shoes (it’s never worth the pain, people!) in order to be present and enjoy myself," she shares.

Schuppler recommends these 4-inch heels, which are surprisingly comfortable for the height. They make for a fun going-out shoe thanks to the bedazzled, strappy design. The brand has them marked down 60% on its website.

These 3-inch platform heels are worth the investment, according to Tunnell. "The Larroude Dolly platform is so comfortable and will help the length of any gown," she says, explaining that the extra height can help keep a long dress from dragging on the floor.

Go glam with these statement heels that Schuppler loves. A crystal-embellished bow with added tulle adds a touch of drama.

Evening bags for women

"Olga Berg offers a huge range of evening bags from classic to more fun and novelty styles, all priced right around $100," Tunnell says.

Chan says you can't go wrong with this customizable acrylic clutch. Every detail, from the color of the body to the text and font on the front, can be personalized as each bag is made to order.

Schuppler loves this chic and polished golden evening bag. You can even wear it like a wristlet.

Schuppler is also fan of Cult Gaia's sculptural handbags. This decorative clutch from the brand embraces the glamor of pearls with shiny baubles outlining the silhouette.

Best black tie tuxedos for men

Tuxedos under $500

The Black Tux has dozens of tux rentals to choose from, starting at $149. Tunnell says it's a go-to for "all things affordable tuxedo" since the company has great rental options as well as the ability to purchase new suits and tuxes. "They have very modern cuts with great quality for the price," the stylist adds.

Saks Off Fifth has an array of under-$500 tuxedos, including this one that Schuppler recommends. It's from the luxury store's own line and is made with wool woven in Italy for a high-quality feel.

For the style-minded gentleman, Chan says to go with this non-traditional tuxedo jacket. It features unique design details like a belted back and leather lapels and utility pockets. The oversized silhouette was designed to be unisex, so anyone can make the style their own.

Tuxedos under $1,000

For a cohesive look and an easy order, you can customize your black tie outfit with Suitsupply, including all the accessories. Choose between a black or navy tuxedo jacket and trousers, three white shirt styles, two shoe options, plus a self- or pre-tied bowtie, cufflinks and suspenders.

Recommended by Chan, this Italian wool tuxedo jacket has a two-button closure and peak lapels for a smart and classic look. The matching pants are $225.

When it comes to a tux that you'll keep forever, you'll want it to fit just right. That's why Schuppler likes this classic tuxedo, which comes with Dillard's free alterations at its retail locations.

For a classy alternative to the usual black, Schuppler points out this sleek tux. The slim cut is a bit more modern than a classic fit, streamlining the silhouette.

According to the experts, a three-piece suit is also appropriate for a black tie dress code. This one comes with a straight-cut blazer, a satin-backed vest and slim-fit trousers.

Black tie shoes for men

"I love these cap toe lace ups from Magnanni," Tunnell shares. "They work with both tuxedos and suits and aren’t too pointy."

Follow in the footsteps of stylish celebrities and opt for a Chelsea boot over a traditional dress shoe. The sophisticated style will differentiate you from the pack in the best way.

A practical choice that you can wear outside of your formal attire, Chan likes the look of these black leather oxfords.

Schuppler loves a dress loafer for men, a style often spotted on the red carpet. Slip into this minimalist patent style with a contrasting grosgrain band.

Black tie accessories for men

Tunnell says that The Tie Bar is your one-stop shop for all the best men's finishing touches. "Straight ties, pre-tied and self-tie bow ties, cuff links, pocket squares, socks, lapel pins and of course, tie bars. They have it all," she notes.

Schuppler loves the quality of Brackish's hand-crafted pocket squares. This one has polka-dotted guinea feathers for a unique touch.

Cufflinks are a chance to show some personality. From a nod to your favorite team to a novelty design like these lions, don't be afraid to make your cufflinks a conversation starter.

A quality tie is worth the splurge, especially when it's in a versatile design like this monochrome jacquard silk that Schuppler recommends.

Don't forget about a cumme*rbund — it's a necessary component to a traditional black tie outfit. This silk one that Chan likes will go with any tux in your closet, and it's under $100.

Black tie dress code for men

If you’re sticking to the classics, a black tuxedo jacket and trousers, bow tie, cumme*rbund and shoes, contrasting a crisp white collared button down, comprise the blueprint of a black tie dress code for men.

Can you wear a suit rather than a tuxedo to a black tie event?

The style experts agreed that men can typically get away with wearing a black suit and bow tie or neck tie for a black tie event. (“To be honest, most folks can’t tell the difference between a tuxedo and a suit!” Chan says.)

Sticking to black will help a suit blend into the dress code. The important part is making sure your suit is formal enough for the occasion. Stick to wool suiting rather than a material that appears relaxed and casual, like linen.

Black tie dress code for women

“When it comes to [black tie] silhouettes, floor length is your safest bet,” Tunnell says, with fashion and jewelry designerCarla Rockmore and Schuppler agreeing. “And be mindful of the size of the skirt — ball gowns and trains are gorgeous but not if people are going to be stepping on your dress all night!” Tunnell also says midi and tea-length dresses may be appropriate depending on the occasion.

The style experts also noted that a well-tailored tux or suit on a woman can also abide by the formal black tie rules, if dresses aren’t your thing.

What is the best color to wear to a black tie event?

According to the style experts, your color palette for the event is up to you — unless it’s explicitly stated on the invitation.

“Traditional black tie dress code tends to evoke classic colors in formal wear: black, white, ivory, navy, red, etcetera,” Tunnell explains. “Modern black tie has evolved to include a range of colors and even patterns. It’s always important to keep the context of the event in mind.”

Rockmoreencourages a more vibrant palette. “Black tie does not have to mean a black dress. Wear color for a change!” Schuppleralso thinks going for something eye-catching and glitzy, with adornments like sequins and beading, is fair game.

Chan, on the other hand, thinks it’s best to take moderate approach. “I interpret ‘black tie’ as a sign of being respectful to the event, hosts and honorees, and outshining them is generally a no-no, as is being distracting from the cause/organization,” Chan explains.

What is the difference between black tie and white tie?

“Black tie is what most people consider formal wear. Dressy weddings, work or charity galas, awards shows, etcetera,” Tunnell says. “White tie is much less common and is reserved for the dressiest of events. Think royal affairs, state dinners and presidential galas. White tie is the most formal dress code and it’s also the most elegant and sophisticated with more rules than a black tie event.”

For example, a classic tuxedo won’t cut it for men — instead, they’re required to wear an evening tailcoat and high-waisted trousers. And the bow tie must be white. For women, don’t even think about showing the ankles — the gown must be floor length, and even better if it’s a ball gown.
